Intro to Hockey
Take your child’s first step into hockey with our beginner-friendly Intro to Hockey program. Designed around USA Hockey’s ADM principles, this session introduces the beginner level skills of ice skating and basic hockey skills.
This program is ideal for skaters who are ready to progress beyond Learn to Skate and begin their hockey journey. Prior skating experience is recommended but not required. To ensure a positive experience for everyone, players are grouped by age and skill level.

Participants will be able to pick up and get fitted for equipment on the first day of practice, April 12th, 2026. Additional equipment handouts will be communicated with the players via email on file. You may contact the JYH equipment committee to set up alternative arrangements at equipment@janesvilleyouthhockey.com
Learn To Skate Program
JYH strongly encourages any new hockey players to take ice skating lessons prior to trying hockey. This helps ensure kids have a more positive experience learning to play hockey. The Learn To Skate program is not affiliated with JYH.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does my Intro to Hockey player need to know how to ice skate in order to sign up? It is not required but it is highly encouraged that Intro to Hockey players have some ice skating experience.
Can I go out on the ice with my hockey player? JYH encourages volunteer coaches. JYH asks that any person wishing to go out on the ice with their hockey player know how to ice skate. If you wish to go out on the ice with your hockey player, you will need your own helmet and ice skates. JYH does not provide helmets and ice skates for on ice volunteers. Helmets are required and no exceptions are made per USA Hockey rules.
